The month of January holds many different meanings. It’s a new year and for a lot of people, a time to try something new! January also happens to be National Hobby Month. There couldn’t be a better time to get out there, try something new and find something you’re passionate about! If you don’t know where to start when it comes to looking for a new hobby, don’t you worry! Here are five of American Legend’s suggested best hobbies to try out:
1.Take on photography: Photography is something that anyone can do! It’s a great hobby to take on because it allows us to find new and creative ways to capture the memories we’re making. It also provides avenues to appreciate the different, beautiful, and often seemingly insignificant things we see throughout the day. And because photography is an art, there is no right or wrong. Experiment with different angles, varied lighting and a variety of subjects to see what you like and what you’re good at! Read this list of even more reasons to try photography as a hobby!
2. Create a bullet journal: Start a hobby that actually benefits your mental health and mindfulness efforts. Bullet journaling is said to “turn the chaos of coordinating your life into a streamlined system that helps you be more productive and reach your personal and professional goals.” Bullet journals can include bucket lists, to-do lists and inspiring quotes. Implementing them into your daily routine can also allow you time during the day to reflect on personal gratitude. Once you’ve created one for yourself, why not do the same for the kids?
3. Find new DIY Projects: A new do-it-yourself project is a creative way to get some of those home projects done while also learning new skills and exploring new hobbies. Some people design and build their own furniture, some create ornate birdhouses, others design a backyard garden. Regardless of the DIY hobby you choose, these allow us to refocus our attention and energies on the task at hand. 4. Try a new hiking trail everyday: Taking walks is a great way to decompress and it’s great exercise. Finding hiking trails near you helps change up your daily routine, allowing you time to turn your brain off and enjoy the wonders of nature around you. 5. Learn how to play an instrument: Learning to play an instrument gets those creative juices flowing and allows you to show off a new skill. But did you know there are also health benefits to playing an instrument? Research shows that music “relieves stress and strengthens the respiratory system. Music creates a positive atmosphere that helps combat stress.” It also helps with “mental performance and improves memory performance. In fact, there is evidence that music can help a patient's brain recover from a stroke. It also delays the onset of dementia and Alzheimer's.” Plus, it’s something fun you can do with the whole family! Who knows, maybe after some practice, you can have family jam sessions!
