Keep pets safe with 5 tips from American Legend

National Pet Fire Safety Month is observed every year on July 15 and it’s a day to learn how to keep your pets safe in the event of a fire. Did you know that pets cause approximately 1,000 fires annually? American Legend Homes has some important tips for pet fire safety. But first, let’s talk an interesting pet/fire fact: we all know Dalmatians have long been associated with firefighters. But do you know why?

According to Live Science, in the 1700s Dalmatians were observed to have a calming effect on horses and were used to run alongside English stagecoaches. During the era of horse-drawn fire carriages, Dalmatians were used to run alongside horses to protect them from other animals. Their barks served as a siren of sorts and, since horses are often spooked by fire, the dogs kept them calm. Over time, the breed became a symbol for fire service and they often have a presence (and home!) at firehouses. Now back to the pet fire safety tips! Here are our favorites from the National Fire Protection Association:

Pet Inside stickers for firefighters: These stickers notify fire and emergency workers that you have pets inside that need to be rescued in the event of an emergency. You can mark the number of both cats, dogs and birds (and even “other” for those who have hamsters, snakes or other pets).

Safe spaces: Keep pets away from stoves, countertops, candles and space heaters.

Fireplace safety: Make sure you have a guard in front of your fireplace.

Wires: Some pets are chewers. Make sure your pets aren’t chewing through any wires in your home.

Smoke alarms: Make sure your smoke alarms have working batteries.

There are almost 360,000 house fires each year in the United States. Make sure you and your loved ones (furry or not!) are protected. The best way to do that is to be prepared!
