Get a green thumb with American Legend Homes

The month of April is Lawn and Garden Month! April, with its mild weather, is the perfect time to spruce up your flower beds and maybe try something new. Our North Texas climate of hot summers and icy winters can be challenging even for the greenest thumbs. So if you’re a novice gardener, or just need a refresh on the hearty things to plant in your American Legend outdoor space, we have some helpful tips specifically for North Texas gardens from The Garden Lovers Club here:

Black-Eyed Susans: If you love daisies, you’ll love Black-Eyed Susans as they are similar in appearance but better suited for our environment. Most are bright yellow with a black center but they do come in other dazzling colors. And they can typically handle the hot Texas sun!

Mexican Bush Sage: This flowering bush is hearty, drought resistant and has a vibrant purple bloom. Most gardeners love this low maintenance, yet full and colorful, plant.

Bee Balm: This plant is perfect if you’re looking for both color and height, as it can get up to three-feet tall.  It is also drought resistant and its soft lavender blooms attract bees…another plus!

Once you get your new blooms in the ground, it’s important to keep them well-hydrated and healthy. According to The Dallas Garden School, it’s important to mulch after planting. These master gardeners say that mulch “reduces water loss by 50%...and protects against disease.”

We all know the hot summer months will be here before we know it. Make some time over the next few weeks give yourself a garden to be proud of. Then invite your American Legend neighbors over so they can ooh and ahh over your gorgeous garden. And if you need a little inspiration, here is one of our favorite gardening quotes: “The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.” – Alfred Austin. Now…get out your gardening gloves and get to work!
