Keep kids and pets safe this holiday season

December 7, 2022

Keep kids and pets safe this holiday season

By now everyone is in full swing of the holidays, decking the halls, trimming trees and hanging lights.  It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so let’s keep it that way. These once-a-year decorations can be hazardous to our little ones and pets. Let’s keep them safe this holiday season by following these tips from American Legend Homes.

O Christmas Tree.  The centerpiece of holiday décor is the tree. If you have a real tree always keep it watered. Always use plain water in case your pet (or your toddler) decides they’re thirsty and want to drink the tree water! If sweeping up pine needles isn’t for you and you’ve opted for an artificial tree, check the label and make sure it’s fire-resistant. Consider using a safety gate around your tree. This will provide a barrier for curious pets and children and keep your tree, ornaments and gifts protected!

Holiday Plants. We all love the colors of the holidays, especially red. Many of us use plants to spread holiday cheer throughout our homes. Remember holiday plants can be hazardous or poisonous if ingested by pets or babies, including mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias. Be sure to keep those out of reach of babies and pets.

Fire Safety. We love using candles as part of holiday décor. Not only do they create a warm glow but they can make our homes smell like gingerbread cookies or pine trees! Unfortunately, they can also be a fire hazard. Make sure to keep candles out of reach of fur babies and little ones, and never leave candles unattended. The same goes for the fireplace. Make sure the fire is completely out before going to bed or leaving the house. Use safety screens to protect pets and children.

Deceiving Decorations. Children may be tempted to eat decorations that look like candy so be mindful to keep small decorations out of reach and secure. Keep fragile and homemade ornaments out of reach of children and pets. Broken ornaments can cause injury, and homemade dough ornaments can be toxic to pets.

Electrical Cords. Electrical cords are everywhere during the holidays. Hide cords from pets and children. Cord protectors are a great way to ensure your pet (or child) won’t chew on cords. Another option is to hide cords behind furniture or the tree skirt.

There’s no place like your American Legend Home for the holidays. Enjoy the season safely and spread some holiday cheer with your decorations!
