April is National Stress Awareness Month and while we wish we could eliminate stress, we can’t. Whether it’s positive stress (like planning a wedding) or negative stress (such as work woes), we’ve all felt the effects stress can have on our minds and bodies. Here are a few ways you can ease your stress without ever leaving your American Legend Homes community or house!
Physical activity is a great way to cope with stress. Regular activity can lower your blood pressure so hit the gym or head for a walk, run or swim. American Legend communities are equipped with pools (Light Farms has five!) for getting in a few laps, gyms (like the ones in Castle Hills) if you want to hit the weights, or simply head outside to walk or ride your bike on one of the many trail systems (like at M3 Ranch). Choosing an activity that you will enjoy will help you stay active.
Another great way to reduce stress is to practice meditation. Meditating consistently has been shown to improve your mood and decrease symptoms of stress and anxiety. One of the best things about meditation is that you can do it anywhere! A great place to start is by trying the 4-7-8 deep breathing technique. Inhale for four seconds, hold the breath for seven seconds, exhale for eight seconds. Continue for as long as you need to feel relaxed. Head to your bedroom, backyard or an open green space (like those at Star Trail) and give it a try.
Unplug and disconnect. In a society where we are dependent on our smartphones, computers and tablets this may be one of the hardest things for us to do. It’s also one of the most important. We’re constantly connected and on the go. We need to remember to slow down and take time to be present in the moment. So put your phone down and step away from your computer. Limiting screen time before bed can also improve your quality of sleep. Which is something we can all use more of!
Another way to relieve stress is to practice self-care. American Legend homes have several perfect spots to do this! One of our top picks is heading to the primary bathroom for a mini-retreat! Light your favorite candle and feel the stress wash away while soaking in your luxurious free-standing tub. Baking is another great way to reduce stress. Many people find baking therapeutic. Whether it’s something sweet or savory, spread out in your dream kitchen and enjoy the delicious aroma coming from your oven. Your family will thank you for the tasty treats! Self-care looks different for everybody so choose something that you enjoy.
